Udemy.com, founded in 2010, is an online learning platform where “experts” teach a wide range of courses. It is one of the fastest growing education sites with 65,000 courses now available. Udemy is excellent for people looking to learn new skills to progress their career or those at university hoping to bump up their grades. So far, 15 million customers have signed up to learn about everything from digital marketing, photography, excel to stock trading. They mainly cater to beginners but do provide some advanced training in certain subjects.
The main problem is since almost anyone can teach a course, a majority of the programs won’t provide much value. Some instructors create courses to make extra money and aren’t exactly experts in their field. They’re only interested in generating as many sales as possible and will say anything on sales pages to attract customers. With that being said there are some talented instructors that have helped me a lot. Not everyone is it in purely for the money. I’ve signed up for various programming courses to learn the basics of coding which has proved useful for my job.

While free courses are great a lot of the time, they are only created to up-sell students to expensive training or monetized through affiliate links. For example in the WordPress course, the teacher is trying to make money by getting students to sign up for web hosting through his affiliate link, earning him anywhere from $80-$150 per sale.
Udemy.com is consistently running sales on all programs. Right now every course is available for €10.99 each. Here are some of top recommendations!
How to determine if a course is worthwhile:
The first thing I do before I buy is checking what date the course was released and the time it last updated. When it comes to online marketing things, change so rapidly that a course published one year can quickly become irrelevant. After this, I read the negative reviews first then take a look at positive reviews. It’s common for instructors to leave fake five-star reviews on their own programs to help boost sales. Also, it’s helpful to watch the free previews to get a taste of what to expect before whipping out your debit card. There’s nothing worse than listening to someone with a dull voice reading slides off Powerpoint slides.
Competition within the online learning space is heating up with dozens of new websites trying to grab a piece of the market. Teamtreehouse, Lynda.com, Coursera, and Udacity are some of the top leaders in this niche. Competition is great for us because these companies are forced to create higher quality content at affordable prices.
